Born on September 7th, 1957, in Memphis, TN, Burney was the son of the late Jessie Wadlington and Mary Lynn “Martin” Blackmon. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined North Hopewell M.B. Church in Taylor, MS, where he participated in various church activities throughout his life.

Burney received his formal education from the Lafayette County School District, after which he honed his culinary skills in the food industry. He became well-known in his community for his cooking, particularly his famed cornbread, biscuits, and spaghetti. Those who knew him fondly remember his humor and outspoken nature, which endeared him to many.

Burney is survived by his two brothers, John Burney (Victoria) and William Burney (Betty Crawford), both residing in Oxford, MS. He also leaves behind several step-siblings in Memphis, TN, and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and friends. Among his aunts are Annie Curtis from Memphis, TN, Maudie Rockette from Water Valley, MS, and Roberta Johnson from Oxford, MS. His family includes nieces and nephews Gregory Burney, Latoria Lee, Wikisha Crawford, William Burney, Jr., Dale (Nekeishia) Burney, Reginald Burney, and Treshawn Williams. Burney was preceded in death by his parents and his special niece, Malinda (Poo) Burney.

In this time of grief, the Burney family has expressed their request for prayers, emphasizing the deep bond of love that Shelby shared with them and the broader community. He will be remembered not only for his culinary talents but also for the joy and laughter he brought to those around him.
