Packed crowd of fans cheering with raised hands

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Atlanta Hawks rookie guard Kingston Flemings will sit out Monday night after the NBA handed him a one-game suspension without pay for an elbow to the head of a New Orleans player.

The league office said Flemings intentionally struck Pelicans guard Bryce McGowens in the head. James Jones, the NBA’s executive vice president and head of basketball operations, announced the penalty on Sunday.

The play came with 3:04 to go in the fourth quarter of the Halloween game at Smoothie King Center in New Orleans, which the Pelicans won 121-99. Officials called a technical foul on Flemings and threw him out of the game.

He serves the ban when Atlanta plays the Pacers at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, the first game since the suspension was issued. Losing the game check is part of the penalty.

For Atlanta, the trip to Indiana follows a 22-point defeat in New Orleans, and the Hawks will be without one of their first-year guards as they try to bounce back on the road. Flemings is eligible to return for the next game after Monday.
