Seven Pi Kappa Alpha Members Arrested for Cyberstalking

Fraternity house with police investigating cyberstalking claims

News Summary

Seven members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at the University of Mississippi were arrested for felony cyberstalking, following an investigation into harassing messages sent to a former member. The arrests come after a prior hazing complaint and lead to the suspension of the fraternity’s charter until 2025. The accused face serious allegations, with a civil lawsuit also filed by the former member seeking significant damages. The university is cooperating with authorities as the investigation continues.

Oxford, MS – Seven members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at the University of Mississippi were arrested on December 3, 2021, for felony cyberstalking, as reported by the Oxford Police Department. These arrests follow an investigation that began after a cyberstalking complaint was lodged on November 2, 2021, concerning the fraternity’s conduct towards a former member.

The arrested individuals, identified as Nicholas Reynolds, Wyatt Johnson, Peyton Newcomb, Christian Parten, Walker Holden, Cole Goretski, and Miles Baker, are all current University of Mississippi students and fraternity members. Each has been charged with sending harassing messages to a former fraternity member who had previously reported hazing incidents within the organization.

In the wake of these arrests, the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity’s charter was suspended until May 1, 2025, due to earlier hazing allegations. The University of Mississippi has asserted that both hazing and related behaviors, including cyberstalking, violate the University Creed and emphasizes a commitment to a safe and respectful campus environment.

All seven arrested members were granted a $5,000 bond for their release after their arrest. The cyberstalking charges are linked to alleged attempts to intimidate a former member who reported that he had been hazed to the point of having bleach sprayed in his mouth during an incident.

The university’s Strategic Communications Director, Lisa Stone, confirmed that the institution is cooperating with the ongoing investigation but refrained from commenting on active cases to ensure due process. The Oxford Police Department has indicated that the investigation remains open, suggesting there could be additional developments in the case.

In recent months, the focus on Pi Kappa Alpha’s practices has intensified, particularly after serious injuries were reported involving pledges during hazing activities. These incidents have drawn public attention and concern regarding fraternity culture and accountability in Greek life on university campuses.

In connection with the earlier hazing incident, the former fraternity member remains in distress, suffering significant physical and mental health repercussions. He has filed a civil lawsuit seeking $10 million in damages against both the fraternity and the individuals involved in the hazing practices.

The next scheduled court appearance for the seven arrested individuals is set for February 28, 2022, in the Lafayette County Circuit Court. As the legal proceedings move forward, the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity’s future remains uncertain, as the community watches closely to see how the university and law enforcement address these serious allegations.
