Exciting Election Buzz in Oxford: Mayor Robyn Tannehill Seeks Re-Election!
In the charming city of Oxford, things are heating up as the municipal elections draw nearer. It looks like we’ll be seeing familiar faces when we head to the polls! Mayor Robyn Tannehill has officially thrown her hat in the ring for re-election, aiming to serve another four years in office. The excitement is tangible as locals gear up for the elections set to unfold this June.
The Countdown is On!
The qualification period for candidates kicked off on January 2, 2025, and will wrap up at the end of the month on January 31, 2025. As of January 9, several candidates have already stepped forward to share their vision for Oxford. Among them is Alderman Mark Huelse from Ward 2, Alderman Kesha Howell Atkinson representing Ward 4, Alderman Preston Taylor for Ward 5, and Alderman Jason Bailey from Ward 6.
Oxford residents will also want to keep an eye on At-large Aldermen Mary Martha Crowe and Brian Hyneman of Ward 3, who are planning to qualify but hadn’t submitted their paperwork by January 9. Meanwhile, Ward 1 Alderman Rick Addy hasn’t qualified yet, creating a bit of suspense regarding his plans.
New Faces in the Race!
In an interesting twist, we also have a newcomer to introduce! William Summers Mayo qualified to run for the Ward 1 alderman seat on January 7, 2025. As the only non-incumbent candidate at this point, he’s sure to stir up some chatter among the community as the election date approaches.
Who Can Run?
For those who are curious about what it takes to qualify as an alderman, here are the main requirements: candidates must have lived in the ward they wish to represent for at least two years, must not have a felony conviction, and must pay a $10 fee if representing the Republican or Democratic party. Independents have a bit of extra work since they need to collect 50 signatures from qualified voters in Oxford to make their mark on the ballot.
Mark Your Calendars!
As we look forward to the upcoming elections, let’s not forget about important dates! The primary election is set for April 1, 2025, with potential runoffs scheduled just three weeks later on April 22, 2025, if necessary. Absentee voting will kick off on February 17, 2025 for those who wish to vote early or can’t make it to the polls on election day.
Once the primary settles, the general election will take place on June 3, 2025. This time around, we won’t see any runoff elections – the candidate with the most votes will simply take the win, making voter turnout all the more crucial.
Voting Venue and Candidate Information
Excited citizens will cast their ballots at the Oxford Conference Center, a location that promises to be buzzing with activity on election days! Anyone interested in running for office can grab qualification packets at City Hall or the Lafayette County Clerk’s Office. Just a reminder, all submissions need to find their way to the Clerk’s Office located in City Hall.
Speaking of City Hall, it took a little winter break and was closed on January 10, 2025, thanks to a winter storm. But, no worries! The team is ready to serve once the snow melts, ensuring everything stays on track for the elections.
Stay Tuned!
Oxford residents can expect weekly updates on all the qualifying candidates until the end of January. With so much excitement brewing in our lovely city, it’s truly a thrilling time to be part of our vibrant community!
