Community Mourns the Loss of Sharon Leigh Wallace Hendrix

Oxford, MS – Sharon Leigh Wallace Hendrix, aged 69, passed away on Sunday, September 7, 2025, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Her family and friends remember her as a loving mother, wife, and community member dedicated to her work and faith.

Born on June 26, 1956, in New Albany, MS, Sharon was the daughter of James Leo and Norma Jean Wallace. She grew up in the Pinedale community and graduated from West Union Attendance Center in 1974. Following her high school education, Sharon pursued further studies at Northeast Mississippi Community College, where she focused on Mathematics and Accounting. In 1978, she graduated from The University of Mississippi with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accountancy.

Sharon began her professional career at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, where she honed her skills in accounting. Subsequently, she spent seven years with Baptist Health System in Birmingham, AL, before moving to Olive Branch, MS. There, she worked at The University of Memphis for 12 years. Sharon was then recruited by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where she dedicated 24 years to the organization, retiring as Vice President – Controller.

In 1978, Sharon married Terry Hendrix at Salem United Methodist Church. The couple celebrated 46 years of marriage and raised two children, Grant and Emily. Together, the family enjoyed numerous trips across the United States, with a particular fondness for national parks. Sharon was also an avid fan of Ole Miss and frequently attended football and basketball games.

Beyond her professional pursuits and family life, Sharon contributed to her community through volunteer work with Baptist Hospice, where she wrote letters of comfort for those in need. Her faith was a guiding principle from a young age; she professed her belief in the Lord at just seven years old during a revival at Salem United Methodist. She was a long-time member of Mineral Wells United Methodist Church and later became part of Oxford University United Methodist.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Terry Hendrix, of Oxford; son Grant Hendrix of Olive Branch; daughter Emily Hendrix Gable and her husband Charles of Denver, CO; and sister Kathryn Wallace Henderson of Etta. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including Michelle Adams and her husband George, Timbo Henderson and his wife Ashley, Jaime Collier and her husband Jason, among others. Additionally, she is mourned by her in-laws, Robert Hendrix, Cheryl Bailey, and Dale Hendrix and his wife Lisa. Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, father-in-law and mother-in-law, brothers-in-law, and nephew John Bailey.

A life celebration service for Sharon is scheduled for Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Salem Church in Etta, MS. The service will be officiated by Rev. Bryan Collier. Visitation has been arranged for Wednesday, September 10, 2025, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at United Funeral Service.

Sharon’s pallbearers will include Tommy Wallace, Dale Hendrix, Jason Collier, Timbo Henderson, Parker Owen, Mark Gable, Bill Gray, Mike Nabors, and Ben Larsen. Honorary pallbearers are set to be Carlton Wallace, Donny Jumper, Larry Neal, Henry Moorehead, Sid Ayres, Mike Wall, and Andy Miller. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Zoe Ministries, P.O. Box 2029, Cleveland, MS, or a charity of choice.
