SALT LAKE CITY – Matthew Murrell, the standout guard who made a history-glimpsing career at the University of Mississippi, has now signed with the Utah Jazz following the 2025 NBA Draft. This transition marks a significant step for Murrell as he takes his talents to the professional level after a remarkable five seasons with the Ole Miss Rebels.

Murrell has etched his name into the Ole Miss basketball program as its all-time leader in career games played (153) and career minutes played (4,452). He has also made his mark in the record books as the fourth all-time in three-pointers made (261) and seventh in scoring (1,788). Throughout his collegiate career, he started 119 of the 153 games he participated in, showcasing both resilience and skill on the court.

During his tenure, he maintained an average of 11.7 points per game, complemented by 3.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.2 steals. His scoring numbers dipped slightly in the 2024-25 season, where he averaged 10.8 points per game; however, Murrell’s impact was felt beyond the stat sheet. Notably, he played a crucial role in leading Ole Miss to their best-ever NCAA Tournament finish, reaching the Sweet 16 before bowing out to Michigan State in a nail-biting match that ended 73-70.

Despite succumbing to an injury that prevented him from participating in the pre-draft process, Murrell’s last two seasons were characterized by remarkable improvements, particularly under Coach Chris Beard. His career-best season came in 2023-24 when he averaged 16.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.6 steals per game. His performance during that season earned him a place on the All-SEC Second Team, solidifying his status as one of the premier players in the league.

Before rising to collegiate prominence, Murrell attended Whitehaven High School, where he honed his skills before transferring to IMG Academy. His performance as a high school athlete garnered significant attention, eventually ranking him as the No. 35 overall recruit and a four-star player in the 2020 recruiting class. His arrival at Ole Miss was met with high expectations, and he has since become one of the highest-rated recruits in the program’s history.

Murrell’s contributions to the Ole Miss Rebels were pivotal during a period of growth for the men’s basketball team, as they concluded the 2024-25 season with a record of 24-12 while earning a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The culmination of his college career has not only enhanced his professional prospects but also left an indelible mark on the Rebels’ program, exemplifying his pride in fostering its growth during his five years in Oxford.

As Murrell embarks on his journey as a member of the Utah Jazz, he carries with him a legacy of dedication, skill, and perseverance that has defined his time at Ole Miss. His transition from college basketball to the NBA will be keenly watched by fans eager to see how this promising talent develops on the professional stage.
