The mayor and board of aldermen compose the governance of the city of Oxford. All of the city’s officers, personnel, and affairs are under the mayor’s supervision. A chief operational officer and a chief financial officer also help the city and its employees with day-to-day operations. The Oxford Electric Department, the Water & Sewer Department, the Oxford Conference Center, Visit Oxford, and the Oxford Park Commission all have over 300 full-time workers.
The Mayor and the seven members of the Board of Aldermen make policy choices in line with State law’s processes and duties.
The City of Oxford, Mississippi’s Board of Aldermen is made up of seven members. Six aldermen are elected based on their wards, with one alderman elected at large. The City Clerk, Deputy City Clerks, and Accounting are all part of the City Clerk’s Office. Tax collection and privilege (business) licenses are also handled by the Clerk’s office. The City Clerk is responsible for providing meeting notifications, posting agendas, attending regular and extraordinary meetings, recording council votes, keeping board minutes, and performing other tasks as assigned by the mayor and board.
