Dr. Heather Nicole Bliss

Dr. Heather Nicole Bliss, aged 38, passed away on August 13, 2025, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. Born on August 4, 1987, in Emporia, she was the daughter of Glenn (Joey) Bliss and Kimberly Messerschmidt Geiss. Celebrated for her dedication to education, Heather graduated from Emporia High School in 2005 and later earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas. She pursued her master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Mississippi, and she taught psychology at Mississippi University for Women before returning to Kansas to teach at Kansas State University and the University of Kansas.

At KU, she found her “dream job,” anticipating an exciting new semester with her students, who consistently acknowledged her passion and dedication through positive feedback. Heather is survived by her parents, lingering relatives, including grandmothers Alice Bliss and Anita Westcott, a niece, and beloved pets. A memorial service is planned for September 6 at 10:00 a.m. at Hammond Park in Emporia, with memorial contributions suggested to the University of Kansas Psychology Department.

Doris Ann (Yockey) McKernan

Doris Ann (Yockey) McKernan passed away at 87 years old on March 23, 2025, at her home in Emporia. Born on July 12, 1937, in El Dorado, Arkansas, to Conway Edwin and Grace Baker Connors Yockey, Doris was a stalwart in her community. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1955, where she excelled in athletics, and later earned a degree in Elementary Education from Washburn University.

In 1984, Doris made history by becoming the second woman inducted into the Washburn University Athletics Hall of Fame. Throughout her life, Doris served actively in her church and contributed to various boards. She is survived by her children E.J., Michael, Connie, Catherine, William, and Daniel McKernan. A visitation is set for April 4, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church in Emporia. Memorial contributions can be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital or the Edward & Blanche McKernan, Jr. Scholarship Fund.

Arlene Roush

Arlene Roush, who celebrated her 100th birthday, passed away on January 17, 2025, at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor. Born on October 10, 1924, in Colony, Kansas, Arlene was the daughter of Robert and Clara Culler. She graduated from Colony High School in 1942 and worked during World War II in various positions.

Arlene married Henry (Jack) Roush on July 30, 1943, with whom she had three children. After Jack’s death in 1988, she married Don Allen, who also predeceased her. Arlene actively participated in community organizations, including Eastern Star, until her retirement in 1988. Survived by her children and an extensive family, her funeral services are scheduled for January 24, 2025, at High Point Cowboy Church in Colony, with contributions directed to Hand In Hand Hospice.

Ellen Jane Hamman

Ellen Jane Hamman passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on September 17, 1938, in Emporia, she held various positions, including working for Hallmark Cards and the Credit Union of Emporia, eventually retiring from Interstate Brands Dolly Madison Bakery. Known for her steadfast faith, Ellen was actively involved in her church and played a significant role in her grandchildren’s lives as a founding member of Flint Hills Christian Church.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, along with three granddaughters. Preceded in death by her husband and other family members, Ellen’s burial will take place on May 27, 2025, at Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery, where contributions to Central Christian Academy are encouraged in her memory.

The collective contributions of these individuals represent significant impacts on the community of Emporia, Kansas, and their memories will remain cherished by family and friends.
