Flowood, Mississippi – Charles Richard Hinton, beloved former NFL center and cherished family man, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025, at The Blake in Flowood, Mississippi. He was 82 years old and surrounded by his devoted daughters at the time of his passing.
Born on December 6, 1942, in Buffalo, Mississippi, Hinton was the son of Willis Warren “Pete” Hinton and Adelle Perry Hinton, growing up in a nurturing household as one of five siblings. His education and love for football began at Crosby High School, graduating in 1960 before earning a football scholarship to The University of Mississippi (commonly known as Ole Miss) in Oxford. Hinton played football for Ole Miss from 1960 to 1961 before temporarily leaving to serve in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1963.
After completing his military service, Hinton returned to Ole Miss in 1964, where he became the starting center from 1964 to 1966, serving as team captain in his senior year. His dedication and talent did not go unnoticed; he was honored as an All-SEC selection in 1966 and participated in the East-West Shrine Game. Additionally, he received both the Outstanding Offensive Lineman Award in the 7th Annual Liberty Bowl and the Ole Miss Leadership Award, voted by his teammates.
It was during his time at Ole Miss that Hinton met Jo Ann Moore from Memphis. The couple married on June 3, 1967, at Whitehaven Presbyterian Church in Memphis. Their loving partnership lasted 55 years, during which they raised three daughters: Tracy Ann, Meghan Elizabeth, and Haley Blair. Hinton’s NFL career began when he was drafted by both the San Diego Chargers (AFL) and the New York Giants (NFL) in 1964, eventually choosing to play for the New York Giants from 1967 to 1969. They welcomed their first child, Tracy Ann, while living in New York, but a knee injury cut his professional career short.
Following his departure from football, Hinton and his family relocated to Natchez, Mississippi, where he worked for Union National Insurance from 1971 to 1976. He later took a position with Schlumberger, where he remained until his retirement in 1997. In 1995, Hinton purchased One Stop Package Store and operated it until 2012. During his retirement, he found joy in simple pleasures like afternoon naps, watching classic television shows, and listening to podcasts.
As a dedicated family man, Hinton enjoyed boat rides with Jo at their camp on Lake St. John and traveling to visit family in Memphis. He was an active member of Jefferson Street Methodist Church, participated in the Men’s Club, and maintained connections with The University of Mississippi Alumni Association and the M-Club, as well as the National Football League Players Association.
Known as “Charlie’s Angels,” Hinton fondly referred to his three daughters and took great pleasure in outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, and camping, while teaching them to drive. After the passing of his beloved wife, Jo, in April 2022, he took time to lead a slower pace of life before moving to The Blake in Flowood.
Hinton was preceded in death by his wife Jo, his parents, and his sister-in-law, Claire. He is survived by his four siblings: Willis (Claire), Edward (Denise), Cloyce (Ruthie), and Beth (Mickey) Bee, as well as his three daughters, seven grandchildren, three bonus grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Charles Richard Hinton is remembered for his unwavering faith, exceptional leadership qualities, loyalty, gentle spirit, and deep love for his family and friends. Further information regarding funeral services will be made available soon.
