OXFORD, Mississippi — AJ Storr is gearing up for his fourth and final year of college basketball at the University of Mississippi after a unique journey that involved playing at eight different schools over his high school and college career. Storr, a 6-foot-7, 205-pound guard from Rockford, Illinois, has faced numerous challenges along the way, all of which have significantly shaped him as both a player and an individual.
Storr’s career path began at Kankakee High School in Illinois. However, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the shutdown of in-person schooling and athletic activities in the state, prompting him to relocate to Las Vegas. There, he played summer league basketball for Bishop Gorman High School. Unfortunately, due to similar shutdowns in Nevada, Storr sought further opportunities and transferred to Compass Prep in Chandler, Arizona. This move allowed him to excel in his basketball ambitions, resulting in substantial personal growth and development under coach Ed Gibson.
In pursuit of better prospects, Storr took a gap year at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, where he displayed outstanding performance, averaging 22.8 points per game. His impressive output earned him a scholarship to St. John’s University, where he had a productive freshman season. Storr participated in 33 games, starting 17, and contributing an average of 8.8 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. Following a coaching change at St. John’s, he entered the transfer portal and subsequently joined the Wisconsin Badgers.
At Wisconsin, Storr had a breakout sophomore season, averaging 16.8 points and 3.9 rebounds per game, which garnered him second-team All-Big Ten honors. After that successful venture, Storr declared for the transfer portal yet again, eventually landing at the University of Kansas. During his time there, he started four of the 34 games he played, averaging 10.7 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. Unfortunately, the Kansas team faced an early exit in the NCAA Tournament, leading Storr to reassess his options once more.
With aspirations to further his career, he made the decision to transfer to Ole Miss, attracted by the promising track record of coach Chris Beard with transfer players. Storr believes his journey illustrates resilience rather than greed, emphasizing his adaptability in the face of unexpected circumstances. He feels grateful for the diverse experiences and relationships he has built, which have enabled him to thrive both on and off the court.
As he adjusts to life in Oxford, Storr aims to make a significant impact on the Ole Miss basketball program, particularly as the team is returning only two primary contributors from the previous season. With a goal to enjoy his final year of college basketball and advance beyond the first round of March Madness, Storr looks forward to contributing heavily as the team continues to recruit other players to bolster its roster.
Coach Chris Beard’s infectious passion for basketball and proven expertise in guiding players signaled to Storr that Ole Miss was the right fit. Storr’s journey reflects not only a pursuit of basketball excellence but also a commitment to growth and community, traits he sees as vital for success in his upcoming season.
