Pearisburg – Thomas Robert Kane, a 63-year-old resident of Pearisburg, passed away at his home on May 22, 2025. Born on March 13, 1962, at Giles Memorial Hospital, Kane was the son of the late Robert Rhea Kane III and Ann Lipsey Kane.
Kane grew up in Pearisburg and graduated from Giles High School in 1980. He went on to earn a degree from Bridgewater College in 1984. Following his graduation, Kane explored a career in insurance, working in Atlanta and then for his uncle CG Muse in Mississippi. He also spent time in California before returning to his roots in Pearisburg, where he established his home.
In a significant career shift, Kane discovered his passion for nursing. He began as a technician at Catawba Hospital in Salem and advanced in his profession from Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) to Registered Nurse (RN). Kane obtained a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in nursing from Old Dominion University. Before becoming his parents’ primary caregiver, he served as a supervising nurse at a nursing home rehabilitation center in Pulaski, VA.
Described by family and friends as the heart of the family, Kane was known for his loving nature, joyous spirit, and sometimes hard-headed personality. He was recognized for his deep thinking, wry wit, and contagious grin. Along with his interest in the nursing field, he had a passion for travel but maintained a strong love for Giles County.
Kane was a devoted brother and uncle, known for supporting those around him. He was a lifetime member of the Pearisburg Presbyterian Church where he took on various roles, including Ruling Elder, Assistant Treasurer, and Trustee. He also actively campaigned for Democratic candidates and had an extensive knowledge of history and sports, passionately supporting teams such as the Spartans, Hokies, Commanders (formerly Redskins), Baltimore Orioles, Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, and Nashville Predators.
He is survived by three sisters: Caroline Kane Kenna of Huntersville, NC, Rosalind Kane Zimmerman, and Jessamine Kane-Wiseley of Christiansburg. Kane also leaves behind four nephews, a grand-niece, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by three cousins: Allan Arey, Patrick Arey, and Mark Bradley.
