Knoxville, TN – Sherril “Jean” Goad Miller Passes Away at 85
Sherril “Jean” Goad Miller, a cherished resident of Knoxville, TN, died on May 12, 2025, at the age of 85 after a valiant three-year fight against vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know her.
Born on January 9, 1940, in Memphis, TN, Jean attended Treadwell High School in her hometown, where she first met C. Mitchell Miller, Jr. The couple began dating during their high school years and developed an unbreakable bond that lasted a lifetime. Following their graduation, Jean enrolled at Memphis State University, where she majored in elementary education, while Mitchell pursued an engineering degree at the University of Mississippi on a Naval ROTC scholarship. The couple married in May 1960.
After their marriage, Jean moved to Oxford, MS, and initially worked at a telephone company while Mitchell completed his degree. Upon Mitchell’s graduation in May 1962, he accepted a position with DuPont Corporation, leading the family to Martinsville, VA, where they welcomed their three children into the world. During her time in Martinsville, Jean actively participated in various civic organizations, served as a Girl Scout leader, and organized soccer fundraisers, showcasing her commitment to her community.
Known for her green thumb and impressive flower garden, Jean dedicated herself to her family as a stay-at-home mom until her youngest child entered high school. Throughout their lives, the family moved to various DuPont towns as Mitchell’s career progressed. In 1999, after Mitchell’s retirement, the couple settled in Chattanooga, TN. Jean’s love for animals and the outdoors was evident in her daily life, and she cherished her time with her four grandchildren, imparting her wisdom to them.
Jean remained a steadfast partner to Mitchell as he struggled with Parkinson’s disease until his passing in 2016. Together, they maintained a close-knit family by engaging with their children and grandchildren. In December 2020, Jean made the move to Knoxville, TN, preparing for her later years.
