Brandon, MS – Betty Magee Roberts, a beloved community member known for her commitment to family and service, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, at Chateau Pines Assisted Living in Brandon, Mississippi. She was 93 years old at the time of her death.
Born in Mt. Herman, Louisiana, Betty was the daughter of the late Norman Carlyle Magee and Gilda Brumfield Magee. She distinguished herself academically as the Valedictorian of her class at Mt. Herman High School before going on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Louisiana State University (LSU).
Throughout her life, Betty made significant contributions to her community. She began her career as a Welfare Visitor in Plaquemine, Louisiana, and also taught seventh grade at her alma mater, Mt. Herman High School. For three years, she worked as a hostess on the prestigious GM & O luxury trains traveling between St. Louis, Chicago, and Mobile, where she met her future husband, Curtis Delgadillo Roberts. The couple married in 1953, after which they welcomed three children together.
Following Curtis’s service in the Air Force, the family settled in Brandon, where he practiced medicine until his death in 1989. Betty took on various roles in the community, including serving as editor of the Pearl Press newspaper, managing and directing Riverbend Transportation, Inc., and presiding over both the Mississippi Medical Auxiliary and the parents’ organization at St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. Her work earned her recognition for her enthusiasm, integrity, and excellence in all her endeavors.
Betty was not only devoted to her professional and community involvement, but she also embraced her roles as a wife, mother, and grandmother. She was actively engaged in the lives of her five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. After the passing of her husband, Betty continued to live in their shared home, finding joy in gardening and caring for her peafowl.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Leah Roberts of Brandon; her sons, John Curtis Roberts (Shannon) of Brevard, North Carolina, and Stephen Magee Roberts (Harriet) of Oxford, Mississippi; her five grandchildren; her two great-grandchildren; and her sister, Patricia Magee Holland of Denham Springs, Louisiana. Betty also shared a special friendship with J. W. Jennings.
Visitation services for Betty Magee Roberts will take place on May 19, 2025, from 10 AM to 11 AM at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Brandon, followed by a celebration of the Holy Eucharist. A private family graveside service will then occur at Roberts Cemetery near Mt. Herman, Louisiana.
The family extends heartfelt appreciation to Ruby McGee and Ruth Fairley for their special care during her final days, as well as to the staff at Chateau Pines Assisted Living for their dedicated attention to Betty.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Curtis D. Roberts Medicine Endowment at the University of Mississippi Medical Center or to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
